Are Deadlifts Bad for Your Back?

Ahhh, the age old question, a tale as old as time…are deadlifts bad for your back? Well short answer, no; long answer, for sure not.

Let’s think about what a deadlift is first. A deadlift is basically just picking something up from the ground. Do you do that? Do you pick your kids/grandkids up, groceries, suitcase, the lego piece you just unfortunately stepped on? Undoubtedly, almost everyone is performing some type of deadlift every day. So if you are performing this movement on some sort of scale, wouldn’t it benefit you to train that movement? Again, the answer is yes.

I won’t bore you with the mounds of research (although there is plenty) that shows that strengthening the back through deadlifts reduces pain; but rather I’ll argue that logically it makes sense if you are going to perform a certain movement on the daily, it is wise to have trained that movement under a “load” which is heavier than what you would normally encounter. In this sense deadlifts help to prevent injury rather than cause it. Deadlifts make you more robust of a human. Deadlifts give you the ability to help your “friends” that you haven’t heard from in three months move that furniture into their new house that you’ll never be invited to.

Now this is all under the assumption that you are performing deadlifts correctly. This is where Renovo can help out. We teach deadlifts to people daily. If you’ve been treated by us before, then we’ve probably taught you to deadlift in some variation, no matter what your ailment was. We do this because of the reasons mentioned: it makes you stronger, it decreases pain, it prepares you for daily life. So if you are having back pain or if you just want to learn this lift (and many others) to become a more resilient human being, then come in to see us! Expect to learn to deadlift, expect to be stronger and more robust on your way out the door, and expect to have a renewed appreciation of what you are capable of!
